What Determines Solar Panel Costs?
No two solar systems are the same, and that shows directly in the price. The most important factors:- System size (kWp): the more kilowatt-peak, the higher the total cost, but usually the lower the price per kWp.
- Roof: orientation, pitch, area and condition affect both effort and yield.
- Module quality: premium modules such as AIKO, JA Solar or Longi cost more, but often deliver higher yields and longer warranties.
- Inverter and cabling: often underestimated cost items that contribute to overall performance.
- Installation: labour, scaffolding, grid connection and commissioning are always part of it, not just the components themselves.
Solar Panel Costs per kWp: The Most Important Metric
The most common yardstick when buying a PV system is the price per kilowatt-peak. At PVPro Solar, our guide price for the PV system alone is approx. €1,450–1,750 per kWp, depending on roof, components and system size. For an average single-family home using 4,000 to 5,000 kWh a year, a system of 6 to 10 kWp usually fits, which gives a guide price of approx. €8,700 to €17,500, still without storage. The exact guide price for a 10 kWp package, including a real example from Rethen near Hanover, is on our page 10 kWp photovoltaic system cost.Solar Panel Costs by System Size: A Quick Overview
With our guide price of €1,450–1,750 per kWp, these are the guide values for common system sizes, each without storage:| System size | Guide price without battery | Guide price with BYD battery |
|---|---|---|
| 6 kWp | approx. €8,700–10,500 | approx. €12,500–15,100 (HVS 5.1, approx. 5 kWh) |
| 8 kWp | approx. €11,600–14,000 | approx. €17,400–20,900 (HVS 7.7, approx. 7.7 kWh) |
| 10 kWp | approx. €14,500–17,500 | approx. €22,200–26,700 (HVS 10.2, approx. 10 kWh) |
All prices are final prices with 0% VAT, including installation, electrical connection and registration. Prices for the batteries on their own are under BYD battery storage.
The detailed breakdown, including a real calculation for 10 kWp, is under 10 kWp photovoltaic system cost.Solar Panel Costs per Square Metre
If you prefer to think in roof area rather than kWp: a modern solar module of around 430 to 450 Wp measures about 1.9 to 2 m². So 1 kWp needs around 4.5 to 5.5 m² of roof, a 10 kWp system about 45 to 55 m². With our guide price of €1,450–1,750 per kWp, that is about €260 to €390 per square metre of covered roof, without storage.Per square metre, a well-oriented system in Lower Saxony generates around 170 to 210 kWh of electricity a year. The price per square metre is only a guide, though: the price per kWp remains decisive, because more efficient modules get more output from the same area. Why Online Prices Often Look Lower
Guides and comparison portals often quote average prices of about €1,000 to €1,600 per kWp for 2026, so roughly €10,000 to €14,000 for a 10 kWp system. Our guide price is higher. There are reasons for that, which you should check in every quote:
- What’s included? Many averages don’t include meter cabinet modifications, scaffolding or registration. Our fixed price includes all of that, and any necessary meter cabinet modification is in the quote from the start.
- Which components? We install brand-name modules from AIKO, JA Solar or Longi, the Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter and the K2 Systems mounting system, each with its exact model number.
- Battery-ready from the start: the hybrid inverter can be combined with a battery at any time, without a second device.
- Who installs it? Our own technicians, without changing subcontractors.
So always compare complete prices for the same scope of work, not just the price per kWp.
What the Price Should Include
Many cheap comparison offers online only state the module price. A complete calculation always covers more:- PV modules
- inverter including monitoring
- mounting system and scaffolding
- electrical installation and grid connection
- registration with your grid operator and in the Market Master Data Register (MaStR)
Is Battery Storage Worth It?
A battery increases the purchase cost noticeably, but your self-consumption rises clearly: from usually 25–35 % without storage to 55–70 % with storage. Whether that pays off for you depends on your electricity consumption, the current electricity price and the available incentives. A concrete calculation with real figures from a completed project in Rethen is on the 10 kWp page. If you want to plan PV and storage as one package from the start, read buy a photovoltaic system with storage.Incentives: What Lowers the Price
If you buy a PV system and battery for a residential building, including a rented one, the zero VAT rate under Section 12 (3) UStG has applied since 1 January 2023, i.e. 0 % instead of 19 % VAT on the whole package including storage. On top comes the statutory EEG feed-in tariff for every kilowatt-hour fed into the grid. If you live in Hanover, Hemmingen, Laatzen, Langenhagen, Ronnenberg or Seelze, proKlima can provide additional funding through its DachVollToll programme, currently €100 per kWp, up to €2,000. According to proKlima, applications for 2026 are possible until 31 October 2026. Funds are limited, and the application must be submitted before you place the order. Through its Dach-Solar programme, the Hanover Region funds residential buildings whose roof is covered with modules beyond a minimum coverage with €150 per square metre of additional module area. Dach-Solar, however, is only available with simultaneous roof insulation and from a calculated grant of €4,000. For financing, there is also the KfW 270 loan, which is a loan, not a grant. Which incentives fit you is something we discuss during the on-site visit; an overview is on our page solar funding in Hanover.Financing: Purchase, Loan or Lease?
You do not have to pay solar panel costs in one go. Besides the classic purchase, where you own the system, the market also offers loan and lease models. At PVPro Solar you buy the system, with a fixed-price guarantee and the 30/70 payment model: 30 per cent on signing, 70 per cent after commissioning. For loan financing, classic bank loans or development loans such as KfW programme 270 “Renewable Energies – Standard” are possible. Whether and on what terms this suits you, we are happy to discuss individually during the on-site visit. How to Plan Your Solar System Properly
Before you request a quote, it helps to clarify these points:- Determine your annual consumption: a look at your last annual bill is usually enough.
- Check roof area and orientation: south, south-west and south-east are ideal.
- Weigh self-consumption against feed-in: someone who uses a lot during the day benefits differently from someone with high evening consumption.
- Clarify incentives: ask us directly, we know the programmes for your municipality.
What to Look for in a Quote
A cheap quote is not automatically the best. Before you sign, check these points:- Is there a real fixed price in the quote, or only a non-binding range that can shift upwards later?
- Are all services listed, including mounting system, cabling, grid registration and MaStR registration, not just the modules?
- Which warranties apply, and for how many years, separately for modules and inverter?
- Is the full amount required in advance, or is there a staged payment model such as 30/70?

What does a solar system for a single-family home cost?
For a typical 6–10 kWp system, the guide price is approx. €8,700–17,500 without storage. You receive the exact figure for your roof in writing after the on-site visit.
When does a solar system pay for itself?
Without a battery, usually after about 10 to 12 years. A battery on its own pays for itself after about 12 to 14 years. High self-consumption and rising electricity prices shorten this.
What running costs arise after the purchase?
Each year there are small costs for insurance and occasional maintenance; the exact amount depends on the system and contract.
Do I need to get several quotes to get a good price?
No. At PVPro Solar you get a transparent fixed-price quote directly from the installing company, without a comparison portal in between.
What does a solar system with storage cost?
That depends on system size and storage size. A concrete package with guide prices is under buy a photovoltaic system with storage.
How much does a solar system cost per kWp?
At PVPro Solar, we calculate about €1,450 to €1,750 per kWp without a battery, fully installed, connected and registered. With 0% VAT, these are final prices. The exact price depends on the roof, system size and components.
Why are some quotes cheaper?
Cheaper prices often leave out services such as meter cabinet modifications, scaffolding or registration, or use different components. So compare complete prices with the same scope, exact model numbers and warranties.
