Complete Solar System Packages: What’s Included and What They Cost
Diese Seite ist auch auf Deutsch verfügbar
Artikel auf Deutsch lesenA complete solar system package contains everything you need for your own solar power: modules, inverter, mounting system and optionally a battery, plus planning, installation and registration from a single source. But not every package is truly complete. Some offers are just DIY kits without installation, and others leave scaffolding or the meter cabinet out of the price. This guide explains what belongs in a genuine complete package, what it costs and what to look out for when comparing offers.

What Belongs in a Complete Solar System Package?
A full package with installation includes these components:
- Solar modules: with manufacturer and model number. We use AIKO, JA Solar or Longi.
- Inverter: converts the modules’ direct current into alternating current. We use the Fronius GEN24 Plus hybrid inverter.
- Mounting system: rails, hooks and clamps to suit your roof covering. We use K2 Systems.
- Battery (optional): stores the midday surplus for the evening. We use BYD.
- Cabling and protection: DC and AC cables, surge protection and the connection in the meter cabinet.
- Scaffolding: for safe installation on the roof.
- Planning: roof analysis, yield forecast, module layout and string design.
- Installation and electrical connection: by qualified specialists, compliant with VDE and TAB.
- Registration: with the grid operator and in the Market Master Data Register.
- Commissioning: with a handover briefing and an app for monitoring the system.
Complete Package with Installation or a DIY Kit?
You’ll find many PV kits without installation online. They look cheap, but the price is often misleading:
- Electrical connection: only an electrical contractor registered with the grid operator may connect a system to the grid. With a kit, you have to find and pay one yourself, and many contractors won’t connect systems bought elsewhere.
- Working on the roof: scaffolding, fall protection and watertight roof penetrations require experience.
- Warranty: with a kit, nobody is responsible for the system as a whole if something doesn’t work.
DIY kits make sense for balcony power stations. For a rooftop system, a package with installation is almost always the better choice.
For price comparison: hardware-only kits for 10 kWp with a battery are offered online for about €5,000 to €9,500. Installation, scaffolding, electrical connection, meter cabinet, registration and commissioning then come on top.
How Much Does a Complete Solar Package Cost?
As a guide, we calculate about €1,450–1,750 per kWp for a system with installation, without a battery:
| Package | Guide price without battery | Guide price with BYD battery |
|---|---|---|
| 6 kWp | approx. €8,700–10,500 | approx. €12,500–15,100 (HVS 5.1) |
| 8 kWp | approx. €11,600–14,000 | approx. €17,400–20,900 (HVS 7.7) |
| 10 kWp | approx. €14,500–17,500 | approx. €22,200–26,700 (HVS 10.2) |
All prices are modelled guide values and final prices with 0% VAT, including installation, electrical connection and registration. Guides often quote lower averages for 2026; we explain why under solar panel costs.
One real-world example is our project in Rethen in the Hanover district: 10.23 kWp with 24 JA Solar modules, a Fronius GEN24 Plus and a BYD HVS 10.2, with a total investment of €21,400. That price applies to this roof and this order; your fixed price depends on your roof, meter cabinet and components.
Since 1 January 2023, the zero VAT rate has applied to the supply and installation of PV systems and batteries on or at residential buildings, so you pay 0% VAT. There is no federal grant for private solar systems. You can finance the package with the KfW 270 loan, for example. In Hanover, Hemmingen, Laatzen, Langenhagen, Ronnenberg and Seelze, proKlima’s DachVollToll funds fully covered roofs on residential buildings with €100 per kWp, up to €2,000, while funds last. According to proKlima, applications for 2026 are possible until 31 October 2026, and you must apply before placing the order. The Hanover Region’s Dach-Solar programme funds additional module area with €150 per square metre. Dach-Solar, however, is only available with simultaneous roof insulation and from a calculated grant of €4,000. You can find more under solar funding in Hanover and in our overview of solar panel costs.

What Isn’t Automatically in the Package
Some items depend on the condition of your house and can only be assessed at the on-site visit. With us, they are in the quote from the start, not added to the invoice later:
- Meter cabinet: if it doesn’t meet the current technical connection requirements, it must be replaced.
- Backup power: the PV Point backup socket for about €300 to €800, or backup power for the whole house with a transfer switch for about €1,200 to €1,800; see solar backup power systems.
- Roof condition: if the roof needs renovating first, it pays to plan both together; see solar panels and roof renovation.
- Wallbox: available as an extra.
Is a Complete Solar Package Worth It?
In the Hanover region, a system generates about 893 kWh per kWp a year, so a 10 kWp system produces just under 9,000 kWh. Every kilowatt-hour you use yourself replaces grid power at an assumed 37 ct, while new systems up to 10 kWp receive about 7.70 ct for power fed into the grid. Without a battery, a complete package usually pays for itself after about 10 to 12 years, a battery alone after about 12 to 14 years. After that, the system keeps producing almost free electricity for many years, because good modules last 25 to 30 years or more.
Comparing Package Offers: What to Look For
- Price per kWp: only this figure makes packages of different sizes comparable.
- What’s excluded? Scaffolding, meter cabinet modifications or a backup-power switchover are missing from some offers and later appear as extras.
- Who installs it? In-house installers or changing subcontractors?
- Brand details: the offer must state the manufacturer and model of every component.
- Fixed price and payment: is the price binding? Do you have to pay everything up front?
- Registration included: the grid operator and the Market Master Data Register should be part of it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Complete Solar Packages
What is included in a complete solar system package?
A full package contains modules, inverter, mounting system, cabling, scaffolding, planning, installation, electrical connection, registration with the grid operator and in the Market Master Data Register, and commissioning. A battery is optional.
How much does a complete PV package with installation cost?
As a guide, we calculate about 1,450 to 1,750 euros per kWp without a battery. A 10 kWp package therefore costs about 14,500 to 17,500 euros, or about 22,200 to 26,700 euros with a BYD battery. Supply and installation on residential buildings are subject to 0% VAT.
Can I install a PV kit myself?
Installing it on the roof is possible but demanding. Only an electrical contractor registered with the grid operator may connect it to the grid, and many contractors won't connect systems bought elsewhere. For rooftop systems, a package with installation is usually the better choice.
How long does a photovoltaic system last?
High-quality modules last 25 to 30 years or more, and manufacturers give performance guarantees for this. Inverters and batteries usually have a shorter service life and may need replacing over time.
Do I need insurance for my PV system?
It is recommended. Photovoltaic insurance, or an extension of your buildings insurance, covers damage from storms, hail, lightning or technical faults. It's best to ask your insurer.
Is there funding for a complete solar package?
There is no federal grant, but there is the 0% VAT rate and the KfW 270 loan for financing. In parts of the Hanover region, proKlima funds fully covered roofs while funds last, if you apply before placing the order.
What is not included in a complete solar package?
Items that depend on the condition of the house: a necessary meter cabinet replacement, backup power options, roof renovation and a wallbox. With us, they are in the quote from the start after the on-site visit.
When does a complete solar package pay for itself?
Without a battery, usually after about 10 to 12 years; a battery alone after about 12 to 14 years. High self-consumption and rising electricity prices shorten this, and the modules last 25 to 30 years or more.
