Why PV Pays Off on the Farm

The most important lever is self-consumption. Many farms need a lot of power during the day, exactly when the system is producing. Every self-consumed kilowatt-hour replaces expensive grid power. Power fed into the grid earns much less: about 7.70 ct/kWh for systems up to 10 kWp, and somewhat less for the share above that. That’s why we size the system according to your consumption, not just the roof area.

In the Hanover Region, we calculate about 893 kWh per kWp per year, so a 30 kWp system on a barn produces roughly 27,000 kWh. How much of that can be used on the farm depends on your load profile, which we look at during the on-site visit.

• Roof condition: a PV system lasts 25 years or more. The roof underneath should too. If renovation is foreseeable, it should happen first.
• Asbestos: many older farm buildings have corrugated asbestos-cement sheets. Mounting on them is not allowed; the roof must first be renovated by a specialist company. We clarify this at the first appointment.
• Structure: older roof trusses are often not designed for extra loads. We check the load capacity before planning.
• Stables: ammonia and moisture stress materials and cables. Suitable modules and careful cable routing are important here.
• Grid connection: for larger systems on outlying sites, the grid operator checks whether the connection can take the output.

If a roof renovation is due, note the solar obligation in Lower Saxony: when a roof is re-covered on at least 50 m², a PV system must cover at least half of that area, including on non-residential buildings. What Does a Solar System for the Farm Cost?

For smaller systems, our guide price is about €1,450–1,750 per kWp, including installation, registration and commissioning, i.e. about €14,500–17,500 for 10 kWp. On larger roofs, the price per kWp usually falls. A battery (BYD HVS 10.2) costs about €7,700–9,200 extra. We calculate larger systems individually based on roof, structure and grid connection.

VAT: the zero rate applies to systems on or at residential buildings and to all systems up to 30 kWp. A larger system on a barn or hall is usually charged at 19%. Whether you can deduct input tax depends on how your farm is treated for VAT purposes. Clarify this with your tax adviser beforehand.

Funding and Financing in Uetze

Uetze is part of the Hanover Region but not part of proKlima’s funding area. These may apply to you:

• Hanover Region, Dach-Solar: €150 per m² of module area above the legal minimum on existing buildings. Dach-Solar, however, is only available with simultaneous roof insulation and from a calculated grant of €4,000. For non-residential buildings, the cap is €200,000. Apply before placing the order.
• EEG feed-in tariff: fixed for 20 years. From 100 kW, direct marketing is mandatory.
• KfW 270 loan: a low-interest loan, not a grant
• Depreciation: for systems purchased from 1 July 2025 to 31 December 2027, declining-balance depreciation of up to 30% a year is possible. Small and medium-sized businesses can also use an investment deduction under § 7g EStG of up to 50% of the expected costs, if the conditions are met.
• No income tax on income from systems up to 30 kWp per unit, up to a total of 100 kWp per person or business

There is no federal grant for PV systems or batteries. Under the planned EEG amendment 2027, only systems commissioned by 31 December 2026 are certain to receive the fixed tariff for 20 years. All programmes are listed under solar funding in Hanover.

Agri-PV on arable land and ground-mounted systems are a separate matter in planning law and are not covered by this guide.
