Diese Seite ist auch auf Deutsch verfügbar
Artikel auf Deutsch lesenRenting or buying solar panels: over 20 years, buying is cheaper in almost every case. A 10 kWp system with battery storage costs €22,200 to €26,700 with us, once and at a fixed price. At a rental rate of €150 a month you pay €36,000 over 20 years, and the system still doesn’t belong to you at the end. Renting really gives you one thing: no upfront cost. You can get that when buying too, with financing and our 30/70 payment model. Request a free, no-obligation quote now and compare buying and renting with your own figures.

Renting or buying solar panels: how the three models differ
Buying
You pay for the system once and own it from day one. The savings on grid electricity and the feed-in tariff go entirely to you, and you decide whether to add a battery, a wallbox or a heat pump later. You don’t have to pay the price from your own savings: a bank loan or the KfW 270 loan turn a purchase into a monthly rate too, except that the system is yours.
Renting and leasing
The provider installs a system on your roof that belongs to them. You pay a fixed monthly rate for the whole term, usually 15 to 25 years. In return, installation and often maintenance and insurance are included. You use the electricity yourself, just as with a purchased system. At the end of the term you can take over the system, depending on the contract, or it is removed. In the residential market, renting and leasing are used almost interchangeably.
Rent-to-own
With rent-to-own you also pay instalments, but the system automatically becomes yours at the end. For tax purposes this counts as a supply, not a rental. Financially it is a purchase in instalments, with financing and service costs built into the total price.
Renting or buying solar panels: the 20-year comparison
For the comparison we use a typical system for a single-family home: 10 kWp with a BYD HVS 10.2 battery. The savings from your own solar power are the same whether you buy or rent, so it is enough to compare the costs. The rental rates are example values; check them against your actual offer.
| Option | Monthly | Total after 20 years | Who owns the system? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy, paid upfront | – | €22,200 to €26,700 plus a €1,500 to €3,000 reserve for an inverter replacement | you |
| Buy with a loan (€25,000, 15 years, assumed 4.5% APR) | approx. €191 | approx. €34,400, then 5 years without a rate | you |
| Rent at €120 a month | €120 | €28,800 (approx. €35,000 with a 2% annual increase) | the provider |
| Rent at €150 a month | €150 | €36,000 (approx. €43,700 with a 2% annual increase) | the provider |
| Rent at €180 a month | €180 | €43,200 (approx. €52,500 with a 2% annual increase) | the provider |
The calculation shows two things. First, even a financed purchase is in most cases no more expensive than renting, and the payments end after 15 years instead of 20. Second, a purchased system doesn’t stop working after 20 years: good modules keep producing, losing around 0.5% of output per year. With a rental, the question of whether you take over the system and what it costs only starts after 20 years. How much you save with your own solar power is calculated in our article Is solar worth it?, and costs by system size are under solar panel costs.

Our way: buy without paying everything at once
A fixed price instead of a 20-year rate
With us, you buy the system. After the roof check you receive a written fixed price that does not change, not even through extra charges during installation. There is no price-escalation clause and no commitment over decades.
30/70: most of the price only once the system is running
You pay 30% when you place the order and 70% only after installation. If you want financing, you can use your own bank or the KfW 270 loan. Important: you apply for the KfW loan through your bank before the project starts. We provide the quote and the technical documents for it.
Brand components and our own installers
We install modules from AIKO, JA Solar or Longi, inverters from Fronius, batteries from BYD and mounting systems from K2 Systems. Installation and electrical connection are carried out by our own certified technicians. We handle registration with the grid operator and in the Marktstammdatenregister (market master data register), and we remain your contact even after the statutory warranty period.
An example from the region
In Rethen we built a 10.23 kWp system with 24 JA Solar modules, a Fronius GEN24 Plus and a BYD HVS 10.2, for a total investment of €21,400. The system has belonged to its owners from day one, and every kilowatt-hour they save stays with them. More on packages and the process under buying a photovoltaic system in Hannover.
Renting or buying solar panels: what changes for taxes
Since 1 January 2023, the supply and installation of photovoltaic systems and batteries on residential buildings has been subject to 0% VAT (§ 12 (3) UStG). But this only applies to a supply. According to the German Federal Ministry of Finance’s FAQ on the zero rate, renting a system is not a supply and is generally subject to the standard rate of 19%. Rent-to-own with an automatic transfer of ownership at the end can count as a supply. So check how your contract is classified for tax purposes. Details under photovoltaic system VAT.
For income tax there is no difference: income from systems up to 30 kWp per residential or commercial unit is tax-free under § 3 No. 72 EStG, see tax-free photovoltaic system. There is no government grant for private systems or batteries, whether you buy or rent. Regional programmes are listed under solar subsidies.
When renting can still make sense
Renting can make sense if convenience matters more to you than price: if you don’t want to deal with anything, don’t want to take out a loan and consciously accept the extra cost. People who can’t get a loan can also get a system by renting. Purely financially, the German consumer advice centre Verbraucherzentrale (German) also recommends buying in most cases: with rental models, savings often only appear towards or after the end of the term. Renting is a poor fit if you plan to sell or move in the next few years, because the contract stays with the house.
Checking a rental contract: the points that matter
- Term and termination: how long are you bound, and is there a right to terminate at all?
- Buyout: what does an early takeover cost, and is the takeover at the end free of charge? A written buyout table provides clarity.
- Price escalation: does the rate rise every year, and is the increase capped?
- Assumptions in the sample calculation: what electricity price increase and what self-consumption are assumed? The numbers should work over the rental term, not only over 25 or 30 years.
- Services: are maintenance, repairs, insurance and a battery replacement included?
- Feed-in tariff: does it go to you or to the provider?
- Selling and inheritance: what obligations do you have if the house changes hands?
- Withdrawal: as a rule you can withdraw from such a contract within 14 days. Use that time to compare.
Conclusion: renting or buying solar panels?
When it comes to renting or buying solar panels, almost everything favours buying over 20 years: it is cheaper, the system is yours, you stay flexible and you pay 0% VAT. The only real advantage of renting, no upfront cost, can also be achieved when buying, with financing and the 30/70 model. Frequently asked questions about renting or buying solar panels
Is it cheaper to rent or buy a solar system?
Over 20 years, buying is cheaper in almost every case. A 10 kWp system with battery storage costs €22,200 to €26,700 with us. At a rental rate of €150 a month you pay €36,000 over 20 years, more with annual price increases, and the system does not belong to you at the end.
How much does it cost to rent a solar system?
That depends on system size, battery and provider. For a 10 kWp system with storage, monthly rates in the three-figure range are common. What matters is the total over the whole term of usually 15 to 25 years, plus any price escalation and the cost of taking over the system at the end.
Can I finance a solar system I buy?
Yes. With a bank loan or the KfW 270 loan you pay for the purchase in instalments and still own the system. You apply for the KfW loan through your bank before the project starts. With us you also pay according to the 30/70 model: 30 percent on order, 70 percent after installation.
Does the 0 percent VAT also apply to a rented system?
For a true rental, generally not. According to the German Federal Ministry of Finance, renting is not a supply and is subject to the standard rate of 19 percent. Rent-to-own with an automatic transfer of ownership can count as a supply. Check how your contract is classified.
What happens to a rented system if I sell my house?
As a rule, the buyer has to take over the rental contract, or you buy out the system early. Both can make the sale more difficult. A purchased system simply passes to the new owner with the house.
What happens at the end of the rental term?
That depends on the contract. Often you can take over the system, free of charge or for a residual amount, or it is removed. When you sign, make sure that the takeover at the end is free of charge and set out in writing.
Who is renting solar panels a good fit for?
For homeowners who value an all-inclusive service more than price and consciously accept higher total costs, or for anyone who cannot get a loan. If you want to save money, buying, even with financing, is the better choice in most cases.
